Springtime Home Remodeling Projects

As summer approaches it is a good time to start planning your home improvement projects. While most contractors have no problem working in the heat of summer I prefer to work in the Spring when it’s cooler. Another reason to plan your remodeling and home improvement projects is that some of them can save you on your energy costs. Getting these projects completed before your air-conditioner kicks into high gear should be a priority.

One of the easiest things to do is weather stripping. Check those door jams and replace any damaged strips. If you are like me and have a dog that scratches at the door then there is a chance he has damaged the weather stripping around the door. This is typically on the exterior and when your pet scratches to come in he can easily tear the stripping.

Another project, one you might not be willing to tackle yourself, that can save you significant amounts of money on heating and cooling bills is window replacement. If your home is really old then chances are that the windows have almost no energy savings built in other than closing the big hole in your wall. Many new windows have the ability to suppress radiative heat flow using multilayer glazing techniques. This can decrease your electric bills considerably if you run your air-conditioner all summer long.

Many times your older windows are leaking air and possibly water around the frames so replacing the windows allows you to take care of sealing and insulation around the frames which can reduce your energy costs and help reduce mold and mildew too.

One more advantage to new windows is that it can improve the looks and value of your home. There are many energy efficient windows to choose from so why not pick out some new windows that add beauty and lower your energy bill? It’s probably not the best idea for a Mother’s Day gift but your wife is sure to be thrilled with the looks of her new windows.

So there you have it, start planning your home improvement projects before summer gets here and consider something that adds beauty and cost savings like replacement windows.
