Cohutta 100 and Big Frog 65 Bike Race

The N.U.E. Cohutta 100 Mountain Bike Race will take place on April 28, 2012 beginning at 7 AM starting at the Ocoee Whitewater Center in Copperhill, Tennessee. This will be a new, revamped course for 2012. Along with the previous years’ single track sections of the Tanasi trail system and the beautiful Cohutta Wilderness fire roads will be the Pinhotti #2 single track section on the southern end. This new course offers a challenge of an additional 2000 feet of elevation gain from previous years.

The Big Frog 65 Mountain Bike Race will begin at 7:30 AM on April 28, 2012. Small changes have been made to this course from previous years.

MANDATORY Check in will be on Friday, April 27, 2012 from 10 AM to 10 PM.

2012 Easter Egg Hunt

Come on out to the West Tennessee Avenue Ballfield in Copperhill, Tennessee on April 7, 2012 to join in the annual Copper Basin Easter Egg Hunt. The hunt is open to all children under 12 and will consist of 1,000 eggs stuffed with lots of goodies all hidden in the ballfield. There will be prize eggs and a grand prize egg for each age group. Get free pictures taken with the Easter Bunny.

The hunt will begin at 2 PM. This event is being sponsored by the Tri Cities Business Association.

Light Up the Basin

Celebrate the arrival of the Christmas season with the lighting up of the Copper Basin on November 25, 2011. The cities of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee have coordinated their festive lighting ceremonies to kick off the holidays. The evening will begin at 6 PM with a tree lighting at the United Community Bank in McCaysville, Georgia. It will then proceed along with carolers to the next stop at the Copperhill, Tennessee branch of BB & T where another tree lighting ceremony will be held. On to Miners Park for the lighting of the Copperhill Yule tree and last but not least is the lighting of the wreath on the Old Steel Bridge.

This event coincides with the opening of the Copper Basin Christmas Village where there will be festivities going on every Friday and Saturday evenings starting at 5:30 PM through December 17, 2011. Stores will be open late and carolers will be singing, not to mention Santa will be in town located at Christmas is Here.

2011 Halloween Festivities

Downtown Copperhill, Tennessee/McCaysville, Georgia will be celebrating Halloween on October 29, 2011 beginning at 4:15 PM with a costume contest and parade followed by trick or treating. Dress up in your best Halloween costume and compete for prizes. Registration begins at 4:15 PM in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of McCaysville. Prizes will be awarded by age groups, with other prizes for best group costume, best dressed pet, best float and more. You must be registered to compete. 1st place medals will be given to winners in each age group. Judging will begin at 4:30 PM in the church parking lot. Winners will be announced at 4:50 PM and will head the parade that will start at 5 PM. The parade will head down Toccoa Avenue/Ocoee Street and end at BB & T Bank. Children will be able to collect treats from downtown merchants after the parade from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Don’t miss your chance to compete for some prizes in the annual Scream Contest that will take place at 6 PM outside the United Community Bank in McCaysville.

2011 Smoke on the River

The Tri Cities Business Association is hosting the 2nd annual Copper Basin Smoke on the River Barbecue contest on September 23-24, 2011 on Bridge Street in McCaysville, Georgia.

Sign up to test your BBQ skills. The contest is open to backyard grillers only – no professionals. Cooks begin smoking at 4 PM on Friday, September 23, 2011. A bluegrass band will play Friday night beginning at 7 PM. Judges will begin their job on Saturday at 3 PM. Awards will be presented at 5 PM followed by music and dancing on the bridge.

Prizes will be awarded in 5 different food categories – Beef Brisket, Chicken, Ribs, Pork Butt, and desserts.

2011 Polk County Fair

It’s that time of year again for the Polk County Fair. This annual event will run from September 13 through September 17, 2011 at the Showbarn on Highway 411 in Benton, Tennessee.

There will be rides, animal shows, karaoke, gospel and bluegrass music, along with other displays and exhibits. The fair will be open on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6 PM to 10 PM. Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 10 PM.

The Polk County Fair is the last free fair in the state of Tennessee. With no admission and free entertainment nightly, what better way for the family to spend an evening?

5th Annual Raft for the Cure

They will donate a portion of each rafting trip taken on August 27 at the Ocoee River Basin Center in Ducktown, Tennessee to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Smokey the Bear’s Birthday Party

Celebrate Smokey the Bear’s 67th birthday in the Cherokee National Forest at the Ocoee Whitewater Center in Copperhill, Tennessee on August 6, 2011 from 10 AM to 2 PM. The US Forest Service is throwing a birthday party with lots of cake and ice cream, games, prizes, goody bags, and fire prevention programs. The guest of honor, Smokey the Bear, will be there to pose for pictures so don’t forget your camera.

2nd Annual Copper Basin River Fest

All kinds of fun races, from bikes to rubber ducks, will be had at the Copper Basin River Fest in McCaysville, Georgia / Copperhill, Tennessee on August 20, 2011 beginning at 7 AM.

The first race of the day is the Adult Bike Race. This race begins at Horseshoe Bend Park at 7 AM and ends at the Copperhill Baseball Park. There is a $10 entry fee. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

The Kid’s Bicycle Race begins at 8:30 AM at Horseshoe Bend Park. It is a race for children ages 6 to 12. There is a $5 entry fee. Prizes will be given to all children.

Next up is the Business Kayak Race at 10 AM. It begins at Horseshoe Bend Park and ends at Blue Ridge Mountain Kayaking. Entry fee is $50. A trophy will be awarded to the winning business and will be up for grabs next year. Prizes will also be awarded for 2nd and 3rd place.

A Tube Race will start at 3 PM. Put your tubes in at McCaysville City Park and race to Blue Ridge Mountain Kayaking. Entry fee is $20. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places will be awarded.

The last race of the day is at 6 PM and is the Rubber Duck Race. Purchase a duck from a local merchant, put it in the river at McCaysville City Park and the first one to cross the finish line at the Old Steel Bridge wins! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded.

Directions to Horseshoe Bend Park are: north on Hwy 5 (Blue Ridge Highway) until it ends, right on Hwy 60 and then right on River Road. Follow to the park entrance on your right.
